Getting ready to file: a quick checklist
Before you start filing online, taking two minutes to gather your documents and information will make the process fast and stress-free.
1. Have your completed PDF or Word forms
LITEfile accepts PDF (.pdf) and Word (.doc, .docx) files up to 10 MB per file and prepares PDF copies for court. It preserves originals. Check the filing copy on Confirm information before sending, and recheck any replaced or changed document.
If your forms are not ready, use Find forms and instructions where offered, or check these resources for your jurisdiction. A guide or link is preparation help, not a court approval of your filing:
- State-by-state court help & forms: Direct links to official court form libraries and legal aid self-help centers for your state.
- Suffolk LIT Lab Document Assembly Line: Free, mobile-friendly online form preparation interviews for self-represented litigants.
- LawHelp.org: Nationwide directory of free legal aid tools and state court forms.
Quick document checklist
- Supported format: Save as PDF, DOC or DOCX. Export images or Apple Pages files to PDF.
- Signed and dated: Make sure your signature is on the signature lines.
- Up to 10 MB per file: Check each upload and prepared copy.
- No passwords: Ensure the PDF is not encrypted or password-protected.
2. Your login details
LITEfile connects directly to the official statewide court e-filing system.
- Already have an e-filing account? Sign in with your existing email and password.
- First time filing online? You can register for a free account right on the sign-in screen.
3. Payment or fee waiver details
Depending on the type of case you are filing, the court may charge a filing fee.
- Paying by card or bank account: Have your credit/debit card or account details ready. Some courts restrict bank payments; use an option allowed for your selected court.
- Applying for a fee waiver: Check your state's eligibility rules and required forms/orders. On Fees, open Who qualifies for a fee waiver?, then select I think I qualify for a fee waiver under Payment method and upload the required document. If a configured case exemption applies, the option says Claim the fee exemption for this case instead. A selection is not approval; follow the court's decision and any payment instructions.
4. Case number (if you already have an open case)
If you are filing into a case that has already started (for example, replying to an eviction notice or submitting an appearance), make sure you have:
- The court / county where your case is heard (e.g. Cook County Circuit Court).
- Your case number (look at the top right of any paper or notice you received from the court or sheriff).
